Home Performance/ BPI Training Coming to San Luis Obispo this Fall!

Cuesta College and SLO Green Build are proud to announce the San Luis Obispo Home Performance Training Program (HPTP) as an opportunity for local building contractors and professionals. Starting September 12th, this 7 week course will take place on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Cuesta College main campus and 3-4 weekend days at various homes around SLO County. At the end of the HPTP participants will take a field and written exam for their Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst certification.

The intent of this training is to give contractors and building professionals the knowledge and certification they need to retrofit homes on the central coast. In SLO County the aging building stock provides a great opportunity for BPI certified contractors. This is supported by a recent study developed by Consol Energy Consulting and SLO Green Build titled “San Luis Obispo County Residential Retrofit Planning Study.” In this study, over 19,000 single family owner occupied homes were identified which had positive equity and significant potential for energy savings.

Additionally, current rebates of up to $4,000 are available to homeowners through the Energy Upgrade California program who invest in energy retrofits with a contractor whom is BPI certified. For more information about these rebates please see
www.energyupgradecalifornia.org

There are five components to the SLO-HPTP which will give participants a deep well rounded understanding of building science, auditing techniques and the business of home performance contracting.
  1. Virtual Classroom: Participants will have a 90 day access to an online tool to study, take practice quizzes and watch videos about BPI and home auditing techniques.
  2. Building Science and Home Performance: Developed by lead instructor Paul Menconi participants will have 5 weeks of building science and home performance fundamentals in addition to hands on training in and out of the classroom.
  3. BPI: Building Analyst Professional: During the 6th week of the program Ourevolution Energy and Engineering will be preparing participants for their BPI written and field tests before administering the exams early in week 7.
  4. Sales and Marketing: During the 7th and final week of the program, Kevin Hauber of SLO Green Build will be teaching participants how to market and sell home performance to central coast residents.
  5. (Optional) Energy Pro Modeling Training: Energy Pro is the energy modeling software required for the “advanced” (up to $4,000) rebate from Energy Upgrade California. This will be an optional training for participants. Date(s) to be determined.

Interested participants should contact Lana Adams, Executive Director of SLO Green Build, at admin@slogreenbuild.org with any questions as there are only 15 spaces in the program. All are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to licensed contractors who demonstrate interest in entering the home performance contracting market. The total cost for the SLO-HPTP is $340 which includes books and BPI certification fee.
